Think & Wonder Inc "A Place Where Creativity Can Grow!"

Inner City Outreach

Inner City Outreach is an Art Exhibition Outreach to offer free educational support and appreciation to art educators in primary and secondary schools. Designed to wrap around academic curriculum, the program supports art educator in exposing students to the world of art and promotes visual literacy. The program also promotes critical thinking by having students understand the rationale behind the production or artworks in their various cultural, political and historical contexts.

The program is volunteer-driven and provides students (grades K-12) the experience of entering their work in juried exhibition, preparing their work for public display, and an opportunity to market their work for sale. It also increases exposure and appreciation for art among the general public. Art Exhibition Outreach also brings awareness and appreciation of the arts to traditionally underserved communities.

Art Exhibition Outreach seeks to bring art education to primary and secondary schools and thereby to:
o    Promote aesthetics
o    Instill art appreciation
o    Promote art criticism
o    Foster an awareness of Art History
o    Raise awareness of art from a young age
o    Inspire art production

Art Exhibition Outreach is not about creating art, it is about teaching a new language: a way to ‘read’ visual art and talk about it. Students are encouraged to develop their own opinions about the work and to think critically.

Our volunteers may conduct in-classroom art appreciation sessions with students (upon request by instructors) at one of ThinkArt! outreach’s participating primary or secondary schools. ‘Portfolios’ of artwork are presented to the students and discussed in an interactive, informal way, to stimulate the students’ interest in the topic, to inspire additional research, and even creative use of the topics.

Schools participate on a long term basis and we aim that through this process all students in a school will in time receive art appreciation education. The lessons aim to wrap around the school’s curriculum, thereby making lessons relevant to the student’s ongoing education.
